Fight night a knockout A full house of spectators watched and roared with approval as 20 local personalities stepped into the boxing ring, helping to raise $80,000 for charity on Saturday night.
While the capacity crowd at Fight 4 Victory 2 were left thoroughly entertained, organiser Paul Hampton says he was left thoroughly proud. “It’s an amazing thing these guys have done. Stepping in the ring
is a huge challenge and a huge commitment. As a result our programme will continue and that’s a great thing for the youth who use our facility.” Fight 4 Victory raises money for the Vic-

Elderly Tahunanui woman saved from burning home
Grey Power elections a crushing blow to Male supporters

Only one member of the “progressive” Neville Malebacked group of candidates has been elected onto the new Nelson Grey Power board, meaning power has now well and truly slipped from the former president’s grasp. The Nelson Grey Power AGM was held in Stoke last Wednesday and the membership confirmed Gordon Currie as the president with incumbent vice-president, Kevin Gardener, re-elected. The AGM was a blow for the pro-Male group who had hoped to take control of the management board at the elections. Instead, the membership voted for Pam Coltman as secretary and Pat Carrick as treasurer. Other board members are Bob Hancock, Pauline Daly, Wyn Cozens, Linda O’Dea, George Truman, Dan McGuire, Nigel Bailey and Kay Price. The vote for the ninth and final board member was a tie between Peter Johnston and Ron Oates, both Male supporters. Both have declined to take their seat, meaning its up to the committee whether they want to fill it or leave it vacant. Kevin Gardener says he hopes the results will put an end to months of warring between the two factions of Grey Power, which included the management committee that he led and the former president Neville Male, who was expelled from the organisation at the start of the year.

A Presbyterian Support worker has become a “saving grace” for one Tahunanui woman. Anne Stewart switched on her waterbed heater just as she had done every night, forgetting that the bed had been emptied just a few days earlier. The 76 year-old Alzheimer’s patient was not aware of a fire starting from the heating pad at around 9.30am yesterday morning as she continued to watch television in the neighbouring living room. Nelson Fire station officer Darren Shackleton says it was a stroke of luck that a Presbyterian Support worker found Anne and walked her out of the house. “She was due in at ten o’clock and she came in early because normally she would do it after the school drop off. Because there was no school on today this lady was the saving grace. She really needs a big thank you, especially from us.” Darren says Anne was oblivious to what was going on in the bedroom. “She was just in the lounge watching

She thought it was the heater in the lounge to start with. She went through to the kitchen and couldn’t find anything burning. As she went into the bedroom she was chok-

ing on the fumes from in there.” The worker, who didn’t want to be named, called 111 and two fire appliances extinguished the fire which had totally burned out the bedroom. “If the worker wasn’t there it wouldn’t have been long for the lady to have become overcome with fumes. If we hadn’t arrived in the next four or five minutes the house would probably be totally involved,” Darren says.

CAR CRASH: A car smashed into a street light on Wakefield Quay last Tuesday after the driver tried to swat a spider off her arm. The car, a white 1997 Misubishi Lancer Saloon, was heading towards Tahunanui from Nelson when it collided with the lamppost outside Latitude 41 apartments. YOUTHS CHARGED: Two 17 year old Nelson youths have been charged with the aggravated robbery of a 20 year old tourist from the United Kingdom. The robbery happened around 7.30pm on April 2 when the victim, a male hitchhiker, was confronted on Haven Rd. The offenders threatened the tourist with a knife and demanded money which was handed over. Police were contacted and managed to locate the offenders in their vehicle.

Petrol used in attempted arson Petrol was deliberately tipped throughout a Nelson restaurant and then set on fire in an attempt to burn the building down, according to Nelson Weekly sources. Fire crews from Nelson attended the attempted arson at Hanger 58 last Monday at around 2.30am. The fire was believed to have started in the bathroom and the police said at the time that it was suspicious. Nelsonlive.co.nz first reported that police investigations have included forensically testing an accelerant – believed to be petrol – that was tipped through the building. Police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says the investigation into the fire is ongoing and no charges have been laid yet. Hanger 58 owner Josh Combes says the

The fire brigade were here within a minute so the damage was minor.” Asked if he was concerned that petrol was thrown through the restaurant before it was lit, Josh says he was leaving
it up to police. “I don’t know what the situation is. The police are doing their thing and we have to trust that they’ll do their jobs and get a result for us. “Anytime something like this happens you can suspect people, but it would be foolish of me to say anything along those lines.” He says he isn’t concerned that someone is targeting his business and is just getting on with running the restaurant. “I don’t know a huge amount about it. I need to let them do their jobs and I need to keep doing my job, which is running a business.” Fire Service investigator Craig Piner declined to comment on the investigation.

Hundreds line up for Easter Egg hunt The Easter Bunny has delivered 1200 chocolate Easter eggs to the Richmond Mall for a children’s competition, but mall manager Belinda de Clercq is worried that might not be enough. The Richmond Mall Easter Egg Hunt started last Saturday when children 10 years and younger started handing in entry forms to the mall’s information desk. All they needed to do was match the number of 10 giant eggs with the participating retailer displaying
that egg, to win a chocolate Easter egg. Belinda says there was a lot of interest in the competition even before it started on Saturday. Details had been posted on the mall’s website and Facebook page last week, resulting in an Easter egg hunt frenzy. “We bought 1200, but going by the interest that might not be enough,” Belinda says. The competition finishes this Sunday. Entry forms are available at the information desk.

Nelsonians aim for speed record at Bonneville A group of Nelson men aiming to set a new speed record in Bonneville have gained support from Mini New Zealand. In August this year, the group of Nelson motoring enthusiasts will attempt to set a new land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The team, campaigning under the name ‘Project 64,’ set the current land speed record of 236km/h for their class of Mini Cooper S in 2012. This year they are returning to the Salt with the goal of beating their own record and reach 280km/h. The Project 64 team, the name a nod to the year of manufacture of the Mini, as well as the New Zealand country calling code, will aim to set the record during a week of timed runs on the legendary salt flats at Bonneville Speed Week. By also running on Methanol and making changes to the car during the week to fit other classes, they will attempt to break three other records. “Bonneville has seen some Kiwi legends perform on the world stage in years gone by and we’d love to emulate the success of these iconic characters,”

Live grenade found in Richmond A live grenade was found in some green waste at the Richmond Recycling Centre on Easter Sunday. Nelson Police called in the Defence Force bomb disposal squad after the grenade was found. A staff member at the centre called police after finding a rusty grenade in a pile of dirt about 1pm. Police cordoned the area off until the bomb squad arrived from Christchurch. About 9.20pm the grenade was detonated and the explosion was heard several kilometres away. The experts confirmed the grenade was live at the time and posed a serious risk. Police would like to remind members of the public that all military ordnance should be treated

Fight 4 Victory ‘a stunning night’
When the power went out for ten minutes at Saxton Stadium on Saturday night, Fight 4 Victory organiser Paul Hampton said he wasn’t nervous, “I was numb”. After months of planning and preparing it was the one thing he and the other organisers hadn’t fretted over. Fortunately the hiccup, just as the event was due to start, was the only downside in another stunning night for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. Fight 4 Victory 2 earned “much more” than the original event, which helped kickstart the trust with $50,000. There was better boxing too, according to Paul and the judges. “It’s so much better than last year, they’re just so, so good,” said judge Bernie Pope on the night. The success also flowed out of the ring and into the tables and stands, where a capacity crowd supported the 20 local boxers every step of the way. Paul says the crowd was amazing. “The atmosphere made it special, really special. The feedback we’ve had back has been outstanding. It was a stunning night.” In the ring, the red corner took the spoils, winning seven of the ten bouts, but a whopping seven fights ended in split decisions from the judges, showing just how close most of the fights were. Paul says the spirit amongst the fighters was another highlight. “It’s really special that there’s these two groups of people who really came together and there’s some real friend-
ships that have come out of it.” The finale of the night came down to a slugfest between two sergeants, police officer Steffan James and Justin Carter of the army. Steffan says having his son and parents watching made the night even more special. “That was huge, my boy and my mum and dad there was the driving factor of me doing something like this. My boy was in my corner and that’s something I’ll cherish forever. To have him up there was better than the win.” Asked if the event will be back for a third edition, Paul was quick to confirm that it will be. “Whether it’s in 12 or 18 months we don’t know yet but it will be back. New networking group set up for businesswomen Simon Bloomberg A new networking group for women who own or run smaller businesses in Nelson, Stoke and Richmond is starting later this month. Jessie Sutton, of Curves Gym Stoke Richmond, and Jacintha Atkinson from law firm McFadden McMeekin Phillips, decided there was a need for the group after discussing the challenges facing women working in smaller businesses. They formed a focus group of six women to develop the guidelines for the networking group, which will be holding its first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond on April 29. “I work in relative isolation so I thought it would be a good idea to form a network group for business women like me,” Jessie says. “Jacintha is one of our clients and I talked to her about it and she was enthusiastic about it too, so we set up the focus group.” The networking group will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month and will be hosted by a different member business each time. Jacintha says it will be a chance for women to showcase their businesses, services and products, as well as network with each other. “There are a lot of smaller businesses in Richmond and Stoke but there are not a lot of support networks out that way, so we saw an opportunity to set up a network.” Jacintha says the network will not have any joining fees and they will “move the meetings around the businesses” so that it doesn’t place any financial pressure on the businesses. “There’ll be no cost and it will be very informal.” Jessie says the first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond will include an opportunity for those who are interested to try out a free 30 minute gym circuit, so women need to bring some suitable gym clothing. There will also be a draw for a free membership to the gym. The meeting will be held at the gym at 3 Elms St, Wakatu Estate, starting at 7pm. Bad Drivers: When a vehicle, including bicycles, is indicating a right hand turn, it is wrong for a vehicle to attempt to pass on the right. Similarly for a left hand turn. I do not appreciate bad drivers doing this, especially when I get knocked down as happened recently. Like the rule of the road at sea, the overtaking vessel must keep clear.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer now past it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product. This season has seen the use of a tried and proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. 'Super Grans' helping the next generation

A group of super grandmothers is mentoring the next generation of mums around Nelson, teaching them basic homemaking skills to help look after their families. The Super Gran programme, which is funded by the Ministry of Social Development, is a free service open to anyone who wants to learn the basics of home management and life skills. It has been run by the Te Korowai Trust in Nelson and co-ordinator Betty Soane says it has produced some very positive results. "When these women learn new skills it gives them self-esteem and that passes down through the family," Betty says. "We've had 39 referrals to the programme in the last seven months and, with their partners and children, that equates to 116 people who are benefiting." Betty says the trust has a team of seven Super Grans who go into the homes and provide one-onone mentoring for their clients. Super Grans Moya Anderson, Christine Grieder and Kiri Self say they help with a wide range of skills including practical cooking, budgeting, menu-planning, shopping on a budget, managing the home and establishing house-

"We show these mums all the stuff we take for granted," Moya, a retired Plunket Nurse says. "It's no fault of their own that they don't have these skills - it's just a reflection on society." Super Grans work with a client for three to 12 months and Betty, Christine and Moya all say it can be extremely rewarding for both parties. The mums learn important skills and improve their selfesteem, while Super Grans gain satisfaction from helping people
in their community. "I enjoy being part of other people's lives and helping them out," Christine says. "The family I have now is amazing - I'll teach her something and then say what do you want to learn next and she's really happy." Although there is a big difference in age and sometimes in values between Super Grans and their clients, Moya says the young mothers always appreciate the help. "I had one client who told me 'we thought you were a bit
old-fashioned, but now we love what you tell us'. Those sorts of comments really make it worthwhile being a Super Gran." Betty says the best thing about being a Super Gran is meeting a former client two or three years later and seeing the difference it has made to their lives. "It's really rewarding when you come across some of the mums you have mentored and see them doing well. I see a lot of them in the supermarket, you look at what's in their trolley and it's very
different from what they would have had in there before. "And their kids will come running up to you and say hello. You are a big part of their family for a while and they don't forget." However, Betty stresses that Super Grans do not provide a babysitting service and that clients have to be prepared to help themselves. She says the majority of their Super Gran clients are referred to the programme through social agencies like Work and Income New Zealand, although self-referrals are considered. The scheme is available "across all cultures" in Nelson and Richmond. Betty says the trust's staff also work with a new client for the first few weeks to assess their requirements, before matching them up with a suitable Super Gran. All volunteers are "vetted" by police before they can become a Super Gran. The trust also runs workshops under the Super Gran scheme. It has just completed a workshop on jam-making and is planning another on home safety and first aid for next month. Council backs dark sky reserve
Amateur astronomer Ralph Bradley's plans to establish a dark sky area and observatories at Wai-iti are another step closer after the proposal received an enthusiastic response from Tasman district councillors. Ralph lives near the Wai-iti Recreation Reserve and approached the council about setting up an observatory on his land. A key part of the proposal involves designating the council-owned reserve and adjacent Tunnicliff Forest as an International Dark Sky area, so that the observatory is not compromised by "light pollution". Ralph says he purchased the property in Wai-iti because the quality of the dark sky was suitable for setting up the observatories, which he plans to open to the public. He says he has already had preliminary discussions with the International Dark Sky Association which is responsible for the designating of dark sky areas. “It would be an awesome asset for the whole community, being so close to town," Ralph says. "Mt John Observatory (near Tekapo) is a gold-rated reserve but it is a long way from any major centre, and there is now a possibility to have an extensive dark sky reserve in the Top of The South. "I would like to have groups of visitors and school children come out and have a

However, Michael says forestry contractors working at night could be an issue with the Dark Sky designation. A Dark Sky area is defined as a park or land possessing an exceptional or

"I know, when they are harvesting, they have contractors working through the night. The place gets lit up like a Christmas tree, so that could be a conflict." The council's reserves and facilities manager, Beryl Wilkes, says the proposed dark area and observatories could be valuable to the reserve and forest, and wider community. She says the Nelson Cawthron Atkinson Observatory at Clifton Terrace is popular and holds regular public events and open nights. The council voted to support the proposal and for staff to commence negotiations with Ralph regarding designation.

Hodgson enlisted for service during World War One from Tarakohe and embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton for Wellington. From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Youth theatre ready to wow with new show Jacob Chandler
A few hoops have to be jumped through when combating racism in a children's play, but this poses no challenge to The Nelson Youth Theatre as they take on 1960s Baltimore in their performance of Hairspray. Hairspray tells the story of plus-sized Tracy Turnblad as she tries to desegregate Baltimore’s TV teen dance show, The Corny Collins Show. Odie Stratmore-Ching has taken on multiple roles and is the production’s Producer, Director, Costume Designer and Musical Director. She says one of the hardest parts in organising a production like this is getting the rights to the show. “You’ve got to get the rights straight away, that’s the first thing. It’s quite hard because there are quite a lot of hoops you have to go through” Odie says she had to get creative when portraying an African-American cast. “If you have white cast members playing a black character you’re not allowed to colour their skin to make them look that way.

You have to come up with creative ways to show the difference.” She says costume and lighting helped create the separation which is important in keeping with the themes of the historical period. “We have a black team and a white team. People have to instantly see the separation between the two.” One of the other stipulated requirements is that Tracy’s mum, Edna Turnblad, is
played by a male actor. A tradition dating back to the original 1988 film. The show features 88 cast members aged between 11 and 19, 20 crew, and a band of 15. The choreography is led by 16 year old Claire Graham. Odie says she has done a fantastic time managing a lot of kids on her own for the first time. “I take my hat off to that girl.” With three, three and a half hour rehears-
als a week Odie says she is really pushing for a high performance show. “It’s come out as I’ve envisaged which is really cool. I have a high level that I want it to be at.” Tracy Turnblad, played by 17 year old Brook Bennett, aims high as she tries to disestablish the "Negro Day" held by The Corny Collin’s show every month. “She’s an amazing singer and an amazing dancer, but she can’t see why she can’t be on TV and she can’t understand why negro and white can’t do it together,” says Odie. Brook says she enjoys playing Tracy due to her positive morals. “She’s a very fun loving, free-wheeling lady. She’s very passionate in what she believes in and loves everything. She just sees people as people and thinks it’s incredibly unfair how they just can’t get along.” She says the hardest part of the theatre for her is balancing her on-stage life with her school work. “It’s a challenge being in year 13 and trying to do this as well, but it’s fun.” Tracy’s mum, the bodacious Edna Turnblad is played by Youth Theatre newcomer Dylan Hutton. The 17 year old says it can be a little strange playing a woman. “This is the first time I’ve played a woman, I’ve got to get used to all the extra assets that I have. It can get a bit hot in the fat-suit but it makes it more challenging and fun.” Hairspray will have 12 public shows beginning April 9. Super Adventure Club won the 12-hour Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race by just two minutes, while The Woodies made it two from two in the six hour race after rafting, mountainbiking and hiking through rivers and mountains near Murchison on Saturday. Super Adventure’s Tim Fraser-Harris, Benni Moulam and Patrick Higgins of Nelson won the 12-hour team’s adventure race in 11hr 21min. They were second early in the race, which started with a raft down the Gowan and Buller rivers and a climb up the 1469m Mount Murchison. Super Adventure maintained that position on the mountainbike up Two Mile Creek and then into the Owen River, before making their winning break on Life Style Accountings’s Nathan Sturrock, Lachlan Brownlie and Hamish Sturmer on the trek through the Sandstone River. But their race wasn’t over, as they had to withstand a late challenge from a fast-finishing Team Aniseed Valley which caught them entering the final transition and then passed them at the penultimate check point. “It was a really close racing the whole way,” Benni says. “It was amazing finish only two minutes apart after 11 or 12 hours of racing.” Tim says they decided to do the race together this year after racing in separate teams last year. “We all know each other so decided to do it together this year. We can all navigate a bit so we managed to get through alright.” Tim says the highlight of the race was “the stunning view from the top of Mt Murchison”. “We were the last team to get up there and have a view. The weather closed in about a minute after we got there so we were so lucky."
Team Aniseed Valley finished 27 minutes clear of third-placed Life Style Accounting and was also the fastest mixed team. The team's female racer, Waimea College teacher Jane Orbell, had coached two of Life Style Accounting's team members, Nathan and Lachlan, when they were in the school's Hillary Challenge adventure racing team. It was a long day for Team On Course of Course’s Steve Strange, Pete Hall and Colin Pearson, who didn’t live up to their name finishing the 12hour race in 17hr 51min. The Woodies were in a class of their own in the six-hour race winning in 5hr 45min. Malcolm Edridge and Brad Wallace, who are forestry contractors, were also in The Woodies winning six-hour team last year. Waimea Ocean Gate’s Libby Malthus, Elliott Kennedy and Cameron Jones were the second fastest six-hour team in 6hr 18min, while the Cereal Killers, Callum Irvine, Paul Dukes and Stephen Busby, were third in 6hr 23min. 2 Fast 4 Waimea’s Hamish Anderson, Clayton Anderson and Finn Mitchell, with an average age of 13, won the three-hour race in 5hr 26min. Race director and world champion adventure racer, Nathan Fa’avae, paid tribute to course designers Mark Rayward and Dan Moore, who set out a spectacular and challenging route for both the six and 12-hour teams. “A few of the racers rated it as one of the best 12 or 24-hour courses they have done,” Nathan says. “We were trying to give people a real wilderness experience and a course where they needed to navigate well. “We also wanted to get the 12-hour teams up high, which we did by sending them up Mt Murchison. And it was great to see an exciting finish.”

It was a successful weekend for United Bowling Club, taking out first place in the National Interclub Competition. The club has won the trophy four times before and are thrilled to have done it again last weekend in Palmerston North. South Island wins drag-racing comp Easter was anything but peaceful for those competing in the drag races in Motueka last Saturday. The Nelson Drag Racing Association hosted one of four national meets at the Motueka air strip, that not only determined the class winners on the day but allowed
drivers to earn points that will go towards their internal club track series. While last Saturday was the final chance for drivers to gain points for their club series, it also determined the winner of the Keith Whiting trophy. The trophy is a competition between the North and South
Islands that has been running for around ten years. Drivers are paired off and compete to earn points for their island, the South Island taking the trophy off the North with 15 points to eight. Top performer of the weekend was Wan-
ganui’s Adrian Rivers with the best ET of the day and best mph running at 186.97, in his 1999 RE Dragster. Nelson’s Andy Urwin-Wells won the competition bike class, Kiley Morrison won the super street class and Rob Beaumont won the Grudge class.

Gun club calling duck hunters Calling all duckshooters to the Nelson Waimea Gun Club. In an effort to help shooters get their eye in, and all others who may just want to have a play, the annual 2015 80 target sporting clay shoot is on this Sunday, starting at 9am. Sporting clays differ from the trap clays which are released from a small hut in front of the shooter, and skeet which is released from two towers to the left and right of the shooter who has to stand at set intervals. Sporting is more out in the open shooting and can be compared to a more natural shoot, where the clay targets are released from within bushes and open spots by trees.
Well-suited to duck and waterfowl shooters. With over $1500 in prizes, including two new shotguns, it’s definitely worth a look. As in past years it’s a very relaxed day, and the club grounds in Valley Road, Golden Downs, is looking the best it has for some time. Cost for the shoot is $66 and the famous lunch and refreshments are available at very reasonable prices. Also on hand will be a number of representatives from local shops with displays and lots of great advice. The club welcomes all shooters from all levels and is looking forward to a great turnout.

Forty-nine ladies will compete in their first ever triathlon this Sunday as part of the everpopular McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon. The event was first held in 1988 and now sees more than 200 girls and women take part on
the roads in the Maitai, The Brook and in the pool at Riverside. Organisers say 225 have registered for this year's event. "The discipline distances have been tried, tested and proven over the years, and are just enough for those setting out to complete their first ever triath-
lon or for the more competitive who challenge each other for age group honours." This year's cycle course will have a small “tweak”, with Tasman St road works meaning Harper St will be used on the bike leg. Entries open until Wednesday at www.nelsonevents.co.nz
